Performing Fashion

Just like painting or pottery, fashion is an avenue for artistic expressions. As it is perfectly said in Guardian, same amount of aesthetic work and values are included in creating art, whether through fashion, painting, or pottery. This can be seen in a very simple thought, the creation of a certain clothing piece in which the designer considers color, texture, and its medium, fabrics. As Maxine already mentioned on her post a clear example of designers’ artistry on fabrics are the Haute Couture and Avant Garde. Both are luxurious high-fashion takes on fabrics, colors, and specificity on details, and art in general.  A more contemporary example on this thought would be Jeremy Scott, an undeniable genius when it comes to exaggeration on design and artistry. These suggest that Designers are Artists. And that Fashion is an Art.

And of course, fashion is not limited to its creation and design. These pieces of clothing and how one puts them together is also a performance of art. Ingrid Mida says on Fashion Projects, “We each get dressed in the morning and make choices how to present ourselves to the world.” True enough, we choose the accessories and shoes that could go with our clothes and pick out pieces that we think would work together, considering colors and textures. Thus, by the words of Doshia Williams, “Not only is high fashion considered art, but what we wear on an everyday basis is a form of art.” That is why we have learned to appreciate fashion enthusiasts who take time to think on outfits. It would be their way of performing art.

Though, I would like to think that this idea on Fashion Being an Art is quite limited and inapplicable in some cases. In an individualistic approach to Fashion, I believe that having an initiative to think of what goes together or not provides the evidence that one’s sense of fashion is also an art. Thus, it is when you’re using your ability to choose which design or color you like and to consider how you would want your idea or concept on the choices you make to be delivered to others that you perform a craft. Even when you try to shop for clothes, it is just nearly impossible to buy without any aesthetic consideration. But if one grabs a pair of socks to protect his feet, or just for the need’s sake, without considering its fabric or color, then art is not seen in this fashion preference.

But obviously, in our very contemporary situation, most people choose to dress up. And it is definitely amusing and amazing to see people put together outfits, showing off their artistic side. And thus it should be encouraged that people would do this on a daily basis. And as Doshia Williams says, “We are Art”. People in general is a perfect mix of culture and preferences. And the world would definitely be more interesting if we all learn how “make yabang” of our own styles and fashion preferences.
